We had a chat with Johanna, the creator of SATTVA, a brand of sustainable shirts, inspired by watercolors
How was the brand was born?
The brand started as a beautiful creative process and it comes from watercolor, I paint and get inspired by nature or by old buildings. I actually started writing poems, so each shirt has its poem and its own history and they are super special. Later it occurred to me to draw a sketch and I could not let myself to leave the drawings locked in a drawing pad, my soul asked me to make this dream come true and I decided to look for workshops in Spain that had natural and sustainable fabrics, to be able to create the garments.
Why did you decide to focus on shirts?
I wanted to make a sustainable garment and the shirt came to my mind; I wear many shirts for everything (a wedding, to go out to eat with my friends, to work) because it is something timeless, something very comfortable that you can wear a lot and I realized that it is one of the most sustainable garments that can be made because it is very versatile when it comes to using it.
Tell us about the collection
It is a small, exclusive and very special collection for me, all the labels are made from leftover fabric to avoid waste and save important natural resources such as water. From start to end, they are made in Spain and the certified stamping technique is also sustainable. The Madrid print is very special to me because it was the first one that I created and it is totally inspired by the city of Madrid, the Austrias buildings and the Madrid "de los Borbones". One of the reasons why I decided to create the collection was because of the need to have more special garments that express your essence and your interior.
What do you highlight about the shirt?
I would highlight the versatility and comfort and above all the sleeves, since I designed them with a little more volume because I think it gives the garment versatility; You can wear it on any occasion, with a pair of jeans or fluid pants for an event for example.

¿Cómo nació la marca?
La marca es un proceso creativo super bonito y nace de una acuarela realmente, yo pinto y me inspiro en la naturaleza o en los edificios antiguos, las cornisas, los techos y demás, que me inspiran bastante. Tras esa acuarela, me surgió escribir poemas, entonces cada camisa tiene su poema y su historia y son super especiales. Posteriormente se me ocurrió dibujar un boceto y no me pude resignar a dejar eso ahí encerrado en los blocs de dibujos, mi alma me pedía que hiciera realidad este sueño y decidí buscar talleres en España que tuvieran tejidos naturales y sostenibles, para poder llevar a cabo la creación de las prendas.
¿Por qué decidiste enfocarte en las camisas?
Pensando en hacer una prenda sostenible, la camisa vino a mi mente, ya que yo uso muchísimas camisas para todo, una boda, para salir a comer con mis amigas, para trabajar, porque es algo atemporal, algo muy cómodo y que viste un montón y me di cuenta que es una de las prendas mas sostenibles que se pueden hacer porque es muy versátil a la hora de utilizarla.
Cuéntanos un poco sobre la colección
Es una colección pequeñita, exclusiva y muy especial para mí, todas las etiquetas son parte del sobrante de la tela para evitar desperdicios y ahorrar recursos naturales tan importantes como el agua. De principio a fin están hechas en España, la técnica de estampación también es sostenible y cada pieza tiene un certificado. El estampado Madrid es muy especial para mí porque fue el primero que cree y está inspirado totalmente en la ciudad de Madrid, en los edificios Austrias y el Madrid borbón. Una de las causas por las que decidí crear la colección, fue por mi necesidad de tener prendas mas especiales y expresar tu esencia y tu interior.
¿Qué destacarías de la camisa?
Destacaría la versatilidad y la comodidad y sobretodo las mangas, ya que las diseñé con un poco más de volumen porque creo que le aporta versatilidad a la prenda; la puedes lucir en cualquier ocasión, con un vaquero o un pantalón fluido para un evento por ejemplo.
